Weld County Strike Team takes GPD attempted homicide suspect into custody

GREELEY, Colo. (Greeley Police Department) – On August 21, 2021 at approximately 5:19 am officers from the Greeley Police Department were dispatched to a home in the 2100 block of 7th Avenue on a disturbance with weapons call. The caller stated that her boyfriend Charles Aguilar, 30, was hitting her friend, Jermaine Bell, 38, with a shovel. Aguilar already had pending charges of 2nd Degree Assault and Domestic Violence for his arrest stemming from a previous incident with the caller as the victim in that case.

During the assault, the shovel Aguilar was allegedly using to strike Bell snapped in half. Aguilar was reportedly heard verbally threatening to kill the victim while he was striking and chasing him. Aguilar fled the scene prior to officer arrival. Bell was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his multiple injuries; he is expected to recover. The caller was uninjured during the incident.

Officers from the Greeley Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Aguilar as he was not able to be located the night of the incident. On August 24, at approximately 11:00 am, deputies from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office Strike Team and Patrol Unit were asked to assist the Greeley Police Department after receiving information that Aguilar was in a home in the Hill-N-Park neighborhood of Weld County.

After setting up surveillance on the location, the Strike Team confirmed that Aguilar was inside the home. Deputies negotiated with Aguilar via phone for over 4 hours before eventually convincing him to surrender peacefully to them without incident. He was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated.

After being cleared from the hospital, Aguilar was booked on charges, from both incidents, of:
– Attempted Second Degree Murder, a Class 3 Felony
– Assault in the Second Degree, a Class 4 Felony
– Criminal Mischief, a Class 2 Misdemeanor
– Criminal Mischief, a Class 2 Misdemeanor
– Domestic Violence Enhancer
