Attempted Murder on a Police Officer
On Saturday, July 11th at 02:19 in the morning officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of 10th street for a male who was walking around an apartment complex with a handgun. Once the officers arrived at the location and attempted to contact the male he began running on foot. Officers chased the male, who began spraying them with bear spray. The suspect made it back to his vehicle located in the 1600 block of 10th street and began to drive away.
Greeley officers began pursuing the vehicle through Greeley. During the pursuit the suspect began shooting at the pursuing officers, striking one of the police cars. No officers were injured during the pursuit. Other agencies took over the pursuit north of Greeley and ended up chasing the vehicle southbound on i25. The suspect exited i25 on Crossroads Blvd and headed east. While entering the roundabout on Clydesdale Parkway the suspect’s vehicle was disabled. The vehicle stopped and the male exited the vehicle, running towards the Embassy Suites Hotel. The male was taken into custody without incident. A firearm was located inside the vehicle on scene.
The male was identified as James Nicholson (07/08/69) who was ultimately arrested for Criminal Attempt First Degree Murder on a Police Officer, First Degree Assault on a Police Officer, two counts of Second Degree Assault on a Police Officer, and Possession of a weapon by previous offender. Nicholson also had an active felony warrant with a 100,000 bond for a controlled substance.
