The murder of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, and the violence and callousness with which it was committed, is unsettling. That his death was at the hands of five Memphis Police Officers is unacceptable and repulsive. This is a sentiment that is strongly echoed by every member of the Greeley Police Department.
I am disgusted at not only the officer’s violent acts against Mr. Nichols, but also the failure of every other officer on that scene to not intervene and stop what was happening. There is no place in policing for the brutality and cowardness that was seen on that video. Even though these former officers worked only for the Memphis Police Department, their actions tarnished every badge in the Country.
The mission of the Greeley Police Department is to proudly work with you, the citizens, to protect our community. This is done with integrity, accountability, and most importantly through principled relationships. It is these principled relationships with our community members that allow us to provide excellent police services to you in our mission to keep you safe.
I want to assure our community my priority remains this agency and its members working with you in continuing to earn and strengthen your trust. We all at the Greeley Police Department stand with the family and friends of Tyre Nichols and wish to express our heartfelt condolences at the loss of, by all accounts, a great person.
Sincerely,
Adam Turk
Chief of Police
