GREELEY, Colo. – On Monday, March 28, 2022, at approximately 8:51 a.m., Greeley Police officers were dispatched to a 911 caller reporting several gunshots fired in the alley behind 1429 9th Street. The caller also advised there was a male down in the alley and a male suspect running from the scene.
Patrol officers arrived on scene quickly and located an unresponsive juvenile male laying in the alley with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim, later identified as 17- year-old Raul Calihua-Calihua, was transported to a local hospital where he remained on life-support until passing away on March 31, 2022.
While officers were continuing to check the scene around the first victim’s location, they found a second shooting victim in the driver’s seat of a nearby parked car. That 46-year-old male victim, later identified as Lawrence Kowalczyk, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Greeley Police officers and detectives working the investigation developed probable cause to charge Paul Anthony Delgado Jr., 42, with 1st Degree Murder for the March Incident. An arrest warrant for Delgado, who had fled to California immediately after the shooting, was secured by detectives.
Greeley Police Detectives requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Colorado Violent Offender Task Force (COVOTF) in locating Delgado after believing he fled west. COVOTF relayed this information to the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force (PSWRTF).
The PSWRTF assisted our investigation by checking multiple addresses and conducting surveillance operations. These attempts to capture Delgado were unsuccessful at that time.
Since the incident, multiple detectives have been continuously working the case and following up on tips and leads from across the country. One recent tip suggested that Delgado was still in California. GPD and COVOTF contacted PSWRTF and asked for assistance. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department as well as the U.S. Marshals Apprehension Task Force (USMATF) set up surveillance on Delgado’s last known location in Santa Monica.
On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, the officers positively identified Delgado and took him into custody without incident. Hours later, the Greeley Police Department sent a detective to Los Angeles to question Delgado in-person. Delgado is currently in the Los Angeles County Jail awaiting extradition back to Colorado. Once here, he will be booked into the Weld County Jail in violation of:
• Two Counts First Degree Murder, a Class 1 Felony
We would like to thank the countless people that called in tips about Delgado, as well as the U.S. Marshals and the Los Angeles Police Department. Because of your help, we were able to help bring justice to the Calihua-Calihua and Kowalczyk families and help them to continue their healing process.
No additional information will be released today. Any further questions about this case should be directed to the Weld County District Attorney’s Office.
