GREELEY, Colo. – On Thursday, June 27, 2024, at approximately 10:00 am, Battalion 2 members of the Greeley Fire Department were conducting training exercises at the Poudre Ponds, located in the 900 block of North 35th Avenue. While training, they were approached by a citizen who found several personal items on the bank one of the ponds and was concerned.
Greeley Police officers arrived on scene to attempt to locate the owners of the items, which included a wallet, items of clothing, and a cell phone; but were unable to find anyone in the immediate area. A vehicle was also located in the area and using that information, officers located the owner of the truck who stated a family member often drove the vehicle. Officers were also advised that the driver of the truck was also last seen with another friend.
With this updated information, the Greeley Police Department requested the Greeley Fire Department’s Water Rescue/Dive Team to respond to the ponds. The Dive Team, utilizing sonar technology, located two bodies at the bottom of one of the ponds. The Dive Team quickly transitioned to a recovery operation and removed both bodies from the water yesterday afternoon.
The Weld County Coroner was notified and responded to the scene as well. The bodies recovered were tentatively identified as a 23-year-old male and a 21-year-old male. At this time, the deaths appear to have been a tragic accident.
No further information will be released until the Weld County Coroner makes next-of-kin notifications. If you have any information about this case, and have not yet spoken with an officer, please contact the Greeley Police Department at (970) 350-9605.
