GREELEY, Colo. – On Sunday, March 24, 2024, shortly after 9:00 p.m., Greeley Police officers were dispatched to an active disturbance at Coin Laundry, located at 1800 Greeley Mall. While en route to the scene, officers were advised the disturbance was between two males and one was lying on the ground. Moments later, officers were also advised the downed male had reportedly been stabbed.
Officers were on scene within minutes of the 911 call and located a 36-year-old male victim suffering from multiple stab wounds outside the business. Officers began performing lifesaving measures and medics were summoned to the scene. The medics immediately transported the victim to a local hospital with severe injuries, where he was pronounced deceased.
As officers were still on scene investigating, the suspect called into 911 to report the incident. Officers spoke with the suspect, Michael Vergara, 40, via phone for some time. Officers located Vergara inside a vehicle that was parked in the 2200 block of 23rd Avenue, in Greeley.
Officers then formed a contact team and took Vergara into custody without incident. Vergara was transported to the Weld County Jail and booked for Murder in the First Degree. Detectives from the Greeley Police Investigations Unit will be leading the investigation.
The Weld County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim pending appropriate next-of-kin notifications. If you have any information about this case and have not spoken with officers, please contact the Detective Finch at 970-350-9682 or [email protected].
