GREELEY, Colo. – On August 30th, 2024, Greeley School Resource Officers were made aware of an alleged assault perpetrated by an adult teacher against a 6-year-old student that occurred at Maplewood Elementary, located at 1201 21st Avenue. Officers responded and spoke to the victim and their guardian.
Greeley Police Officers were notified of this incident by Greeley-Evans School District 6 Administrators and District 6 Security. Once the Greeley Police Department was made aware of the allegations, we immediately opened a criminal investigation. The School District also notified us that they placed the teacher, identified as Joshua David Wainscott, 40, on administrative leave once they were made aware of the allegations.
Since that time, officers have been investigating the incident. On September 12, 2024, Greeley Police Officers contacted Wainscott and arrested him. He was transported to the Weld County Jail and booked on charges of 2nd Degree Assault–Strangulation, a Class 4 Felony, and Child Abuse, a Class 3 Misdemeanor.
Due the victim’s status as a juvenile, we will not be releasing their identity or any further information that would specifically identify them. Any questions regarding Wainscott’s employment status should be directed to District 6 representatives. If you have any information about this case and have not already spoken with officers, please contact School Resource Officer Diaz at (970) 350-9605.
Any charges are merely an accusation. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
