This Press Release is being distributed on behalf of the 19th judicial Critical Incident Response Team.

On Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at approximately 11:30 a.m., deputies with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home in the 2400 block of Cottonwood Court in Kersey, Colorado reference a trespassing in progress. The caller reported that a 26-year-old man, and a woman he was with, were attempting to steal vehicles in the area and forcefully enter their home. As deputies were still en route to the call, another 911 caller stated that the male suspect had a rifle with him which he used to shoot a home in the neighborhood. The suspects then fled the area in a vehicle prior to the deputies’ arrival.

Responding deputies located the fleeing vehicle nearby and initiated a vehicle pursuit. The pursuit traveled east from the incident location and then returned west on Interstate 76. During the pursuit, the suspect pointed the rifle at pursuing deputies at least once while traveling at speeds upwards of 100 miles per hour. As the pursuit continued west, officers from surrounding agencies assisted by preparing to set up spike strips and other non-lethal methods of terminating the pursuit and bringing the incident to a peaceful resolution.

An officer with the Hudson Police Department performed a successful PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuver, disabling the vehicle. The male suspect then fired one round while a Hudson Police officer simultaneously fired one round. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. The suspect’s identity will be released at a later time by the Weld County Coroner.
