GREELEY, Colo. – It is with a profound sorrow and heavy hearts that the Greeley Police Department announces the passing of our beloved colleague and friend Commander Roy Smith. Commander Smith passed away peacefully at his home in Greeley on Saturday, August 5, 2023. Commander Smith started with the Greeley Police Department on May 23, 1996. His expertise and professionalism helped countless crime victims in our community find justice.
Commander Smith worked in most areas of the police department during his almost three decades of service to the City of Greeley. He served as a patrol officer, detective, and supervisor during his lengthy career and was a highly respected member of the Weld County law enforcement community. His most recent assignment was leading the Greeley Police Department Investigations Section. He also served as a team coordinator for the 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
Commander Smith showed genuine care for each member of the department and was an active member of the Greeley Community.
“Roy was a dedicated, compassionate, and courageous leader in our department. We are all heartbroken by his loss, and he will forever be missed,” said Chief Adam Turk.
In honor of Commander Roy Smith’s life and service, employees of the Greeley Police Department will be shrouding their badges. The Greeley Police Department wishes to extend its deepest condolences to Commander Smith’s family, friends, and loved ones. The Greeley Police Department and the Smith family are grateful for all the community support during this difficult time.
A celebration of life service honoring Commander Smith will be held at the Aims Community College Welcome Center, located 4901 W. 20th Street, Greeley, CO on August 17, 2023, at 3:00 p.m.
