GREELEY, Colo. – On Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 11:23 a.m., the Weld County Regional Communication Center began to receive several 911 calls reporting gunshots at the Creekstone Apartments, located in the 3700 block of 25th Street. The callers reported some suspects fleeing on foot while others fled in vehicles.
Numerous Greeley Police officers immediately responded to the area and arrested two suspects at Burger King, located in the 2400 block of 35th Avenue, without incident. One of those suspects was armed with a handgun when he was taken into custody. As officers on scene at Burger King were contacting those suspects, another officer observed one of the suspect vehicles fleeing and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle.
That suspect vehicle fled from the officer and out of sight. Minutes later, a 911 call was received reporting that a vehicle had just crashed into a home in the 1900 block of 25th Avenue. The four occupants in the vehicle fled on foot prior to officers arriving to the scene. Two of the suspects were taken into custody soon after and transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the vehicle crash.
A perimeter was established to locate the other occupants and the Greeley Police Drone Unit was activated to assist with the search. Utilizing the drone, officers quickly located the other two suspects in the area. They were also taken into custody without incident. No bystanders, residents of the apartment complex, officers, or suspects were injured in the shooting or subsequent arrest.
Greeley Police sent out a reverse 911 message advising the people in the immediate area to shelter in place as the incident was rapidly unfolding. Due to the proximity of the shooting to Greeley West High School as well as the resulting search for and arrest of the outstanding suspects that fled, multiple District 6 Schools moved to a “Secure Perimeter” status. This status level means all students and staff were brought inside and the exterior doors were locked with nobody being allowed to enter or leave the school.
The schools that were moved to a “Secure Perimeter” status in addition to Greeley West High School were Meeker Elementary, Scott Elementary, and Heath Middle School. Dayspring Christian Academy also moved to the same status out of an abundance of caution.
In total, six males were detained and subsequently arrested because of this incident, including 3 juveniles and 3 adults. Officers also located multiple handguns and rifles related to the case. Due to the age of some suspects, as well as the sensitive nature of the investigation, the names of the suspect’s will be released at a later date.
The investigation is still on-going. Investigator and crime scene technicians will likely be on scene of the shooting well into the evening collecting evidence. If you have any information on this case and have not been interviewed by officers, please contact Detective KellerTwigg at 970-350-9670.
