GREELEY, Colo. – On Thursday, October 31, 2024, at 8:01 am, Greeley Police Officers were dispatched to a shooting that had just occurred in the parking lot of the UCHealth Greeley Hospital, located at 6767 West 29th Street. A 35-year-old female victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds walked into the UCHealth Emergency Room. Greeley Police Officers were quickly able to identify the 38-year-old male suspect who fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. A crime scene was established and UCHealth was placed on a secure status.
The victim is currently being cared for and is expected to survive. While detectives and officers were investigating at the hospital, information was received that the suspect had fled to a residence in the 1900 block of McNitt Street in Evans. Officers from the Evans Police Department and Greeley Police Officers responded to that location.
Because the McNitt Street address is near both the Chappelow Arts Magnet School, located in the 2000 block of 35th Street, and the Dos Rios Elementary School, located at 2201 34th Street, Greeley-Evans District 6 was notified and the schools were temporarily placed on a lockdown status. Evans Police also stationed officers at the schools as a precautionary measure. The schools have since resumed normal operations, and parents and guardians have been in contact and notified by the district.
When officers arrived at the McNitt Street scene, they observed a car on fire at the residence and requested fire personnel to assist. Officers briefly made contact with the suspect, who they confirmed was alone, and had barricaded himself inside the home. Due to the gravity of the initial shooting and the escalating situation, both the Greeley SWAT Team and Weld County Regional SWAT Team were activated and responded to the scene to assist.
While attempting to reach the suspect, the vehicle fire spread to the residence where the suspect was occupying. Fire crews managed to extinguish the fire and SWAT teams continued their efforts to contact the suspect with no response. Eventually, SWAT made entry into the home and located the suspect, who was found deceased.
Initial investigations indicate that the victim and suspect knew each other prior to the shooting and there is no reason to believe this was a random incident. There is no on-going threat to the public, hospital, or any schools at this time. The suspect’s identity and cause of death will be released following next-of-kin notification and a review by the Weld County Coroner.
