Stimulus Checks Scam
Unfortunately, scammers prey on hard times. The Attorney General has already released a statement about scammers trying to claim the Covid-19 stimulus checks. The Better Business Bureau is already reporting that scammers are calling and telling people they qualify for a government grant, but first, they will need to confirm their identity and pay a small “processing fee”. The stimulus checks are being issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Remember the IRS will NEVER:  Call to demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.  Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested.  Demand that you pay taxes without allowing you to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.  Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer.  Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

We have also heard that they are requesting PayPal information and requesting Western Union payment. We have seen in previous investigations that scammers also ask you to mail them gift cards. If you have questions about these possible scams you can always call the front desk to ask questions, message us on social media or even stop into the Police Department, we are open. Share this with friends and family to raise awareness and education. At this time we have zero reports of this in Greeley however, we realize we need to get ahead of this scam.
